A quick update from our August committee meeting and what’s happening around the club over the next few months.

A New Way of Working
We want to be more proactive and keep things moving between meetings. Committee members will take ownership of different areas and projects and give a quick progress update at our monthly meetings.
New ideas are always welcome. Initiatives will be shared with the committee, and agreed actions will be tracked.

Membership
We’ve agreed a new, simpler membership structure, with options for adults, juniors, over-65s, people who want to try rowing, and visitors.
Going forward, our membership year will run from March to March. Full details will be shared separately.

More Boats, More Opportunities
With the arrival of our new boats and equipment, we now have more opportunities to get people on the water and row more regularly.
We want to make the best use of what we have — for recreational rowing, juniors, structured training and those who want to compete.

Safety
With more boats and more people on the water, safety and looking after our equipment are more important than ever.
  • Life jackets must be worn in singles and doubles.
  • The new life jackets are for wearing only. Designated life jackets will stay with the quads.
  • Junior sessions in singles and doubles will have safety-boat cover.
  • Always check your boat and equipment before going out, and report anything that doesn’t look right.
  • We’re also improving our safety information and rescue procedures.
Training
We want training to be a little more structured while still keeping rowing enjoyable. Sessions will include more technique work and drills, and we’re working on a structured gym programme for the winter months.

Racing & Regattas
It’s been a busy few weeks for the club. We had a very successful regatta at Cairndhu, and some of our juniors stepped up to race at the Senior Championships in Wicklow — a great experience and a chance to see the level we can work towards.
This weekend we have the Tullaghan Regatta, followed by the Junior Championships.
We want to keep giving our members opportunities to race. More racing, together with more commitment to regular training, will help us build stronger crews — and hopefully we’ll have some medals to celebrate soon!
Racing isn’t for everyone, and that’s absolutely fine. There will always be space in the club for recreational rowing as well as those who want to train and compete.

More Coaches
We want to grow our coaching team and support members interested in gaining coaching qualifications.
More coaches means more sessions and more opportunities to row.

Ballyshannon & Club Facilities
We want to get Ballyshannon properly up and running, with more regular training days and times. This will give members another opportunity to train consistently and help us make better use of the facility.
We’ll also continue improving the boathouse, storage and organisation of our boats and equipment.

Our Friends from Pesaro
It was great to welcome Canottieri Pesaro to Donegal for a few days of rowing. They were really enthusiastic about our facilities and enjoyed getting out on Donegal Bay.
Pesaro is a large and well-established rowing club in Italy and will host the Italian Masters Championships in October.
And the friendship works both ways! If you’re ever in Italy and would like to row in Pesaro, just give me a shout — they’ll be very happy to welcome DBRC members.

We Need Your Support
The club works because people give some of their time. If you have a little spare time and would like to help — with sessions, safety boats, coaching, facilities or anything else — please get in touch. Every bit of help makes a difference.
Most importantly, stay safe, check before you go out, and take care of our boats and equipment.

Thanks everyone, and see you on the water!
